Been a little off my track here on for a few different reasons. Life off the web got a little crazy has a lot to do with it, so haven’t really been able to get caught up on all of my side projects. (This site being one of them.) I have about 2-3 book reviews I need to get done and a stack of books I would like to get reading! Don’t even get me started on the extreme fail of the weekly photo project. Though I knew that was going to be one of the first things that went by the wayside if life got too busy.

I have recently started a new site that also probably has something to do with my being behind on things, Hosehead Life is my new site on Life with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Some might find it interesting, so feel free to stop by and let me know what you think. (Facebook followers have probably already seen the site as I have it update my main twitter feed, which then auto updates my Facebook status.)

For those who were aware of it, I did have a website called “Scanner Whores.” I recently closed down the site and let the domain expire. The domain name and website are from an old joke.

I closed it down mostly because I didn’t use it at all, never updated it, and it never received above minimal traffic. I did however have a couple of useful pieces of information on the site. These I have moved to pages here on Olorinpc.com

ND-10 Codes

Stutsman County Frequencies

Beyond that, I never really used the site much. So it really wasn’t worth the $8 a year to keep the domain. This also goes along with my consolidation effort. My new personal rule was, if I pick up a new domain name, I need to drop an unused one. So with starting Epic Plains – something had to go. Seeing as I did this two weeks ago and haven’t received a single note on it, it looks like it was a good call to just kill the site.

Any scanner/public safety related posts will appear here on Olorinpc.com in the future.

Thanks!

Well, I was working on a draft of a new post and I noticed that I was at 199 posts. I figured I would put a quick note about that up. It is kind of neat actually. One way or another I have been having this blog and it’s format since 2005.

It originally started with a lot of tech stuff, but I split that stuff off onto Supergeekblog.com – and kept this one more personal/random sort of stuff. The site has gone through plenty of changes in the last few years, all of which has been a fun process.

I really like the direction I have this site going now though. The face lift to the theme, and the bit more time in general I spend with the site has made a real impact. This site is still about “Jake” and I do blog about personal happenings, but I also try to cover other topics (eh heh politics) and whatnot. In doing so, the readership has increased along with general traffic. That has reinforced to me that I am doing something right – and enjoying it as well.

So – thanks everyone for visiting and celebrating the 200th post. Here is to 200 more!

Hi everyone! Welcome to all of the new visitors to the site. With a couple of decent articles this site has gone from about 10 pages views a day to a little over 300 yesterday and looking like that or more today.

So as a nod to my readers, and a thank you to the long time followers, I am finally realeasing a new theme for the site. The old one had been live around 3 years. It had become too outdated to support much of the newer wordpress functionality. It isn’t 100% finished yet – I plan on playing around with the side bar till I get everything just right. With the updated theme, I should be able to include some fun new widgets.

Anywho – check out the site and let me know what you think.

Thanks for stopping by!

In trying to revamp my blogging style I noticed something today. My “About” page was not only very outdated, I don’t think it was very useful.

So I have spent some time updating it, added a contact form to this site, and generally cleaned up that part of my blog. This is all part of my “getting back to the basics” of blogging.

Huh?

For those of you who occasionally follow my blog (I have facebook set to automatically pull posts from my blog and set them as “Facebook Notes.” So my readership count on the site is only relevant in terms of RSS feeds, not total readers) you have probably noticed my posting tends to be infrequent, random, etc. I keep my topics semi-divided up via having different blogs… though in doing that I tend to spread the frequency issues across all of them.

I have decided the best way is to approach this (this being blogging in general) is from a different angle. I have long taken the hobby approach. Throw something up that interests me from time to time and call it good. In doing so, my sites have lost a sense of structure and urgency. Any webmaster/blogger knows – content is king. Without fresh content, you will have no fresh viewers. That brings me back to the “getting back to the basics” comment.

It is a mindset thing. I am going to start thinking like I did in college when I was Editor in Chief of The Collegian. Set up a publication schedule, write articles as well as link to other content, and try to take a more proffessional approach to each piece. The hope for this is not only will I post more regularily, but that the quality of each post, across all sites, increases as well. With an increase in frequency and quality – readership should increase as well.

I am considering all of my blogs a single production. Each blog is a “section.” This should hopefully help me to focus on my 3 main blogs and prevent me from just posting to one or the other. (I have a personal, tech, and political division going on.)

If it works out well – you should notice a difference.

Well I managed limited accomplishments this weekend. I had planned on getting the whole upstairs finished, but that didn’t exactly happen. A few distractions prevented that. I did however get some time to work on setting up my new blog.

It is going to run parallel to Axapta Source and eventually totally replace that. I enjoyed running a blog that was related to my profession, however since I have limited involvement with the Axapta (Dynamics AX) scene anymore, I have been doing less and less with the site. So I am developing SAP: BI Source – a resource for SAP Business Intelligence.

It is a work in progress, but is coming along slowly but surely.

I will paste below this, my “myspace” post. The gist is however, I would rather upkeep this blog, than the mired mess of other social profiles I have managed to get myself into.

In all reality, I have overbooked myself. I tried to upkeep this site, myspace, facebook, firefigher nation, deviantART, work blogs, (play World of Warcraft) and a couple of others. The net result was – minimal work on all ~ and jack for quality. It has boiled down to a desire to consolidate my effort. I love the blogging community, and the art community, so am going to focus my efforts on just those two for a while.

I hope my below post explains that a little better:

I am thinking of leaving myspace. Why? too many social profiles, so the net result is that I don’t keep any of them up.There are some people that I do have on this site, that aren’t on either Facebook, or another one of my sites. (Dana, Phil, Mike, and Megan are the first ones that come to mind.) That being said… I just do not keep this site up… and if I do… ads pop up and myspace keeps the revenue. I would rather keep a non-ad blog, or a site where I know where the revenue goes. So… pretty soon I think I will be locking down my account here. The below accounts are the only ones I will be keeping track of:

Facebook – I will upkeep this to make sure HS/College/Work friends all have a point of contact for me. (Less messy than myspace as well imo)

Jakebarnard.com – I am going to start blogging only to this. Any ad revenue on said blog goes to me not a corp. (Yea I haven’t ever made any on it yet, but I would rather the potential not go to a major corp.)

olorinpc.deviantart.com ~ I have actually become a fairly active member in this art community. I have been a member for years, and since my dad became an admin… have become not only more involved, but a subscriber, and a contributing artist.

For firefighters, I do have a minor page at Firefigher Nation.com ~ however the upkeep is very minor.

The main goal is to upkeep my personal blog, and my deviant art page… dA probably being the primary goal for a while here.

All of that translates to… I plan on locking down and all but abandoning myspace. (I am going to keep track for a little bit, but I am hoping anyone critical on this site who hasn’t already, shifts to at least facebook.)

Yep I am still around, actually I have been posting on a number of other blogs, and neglected my personal one.

One of the blogs I have been posting on is my myspace blog. Infrequently, but it is actually more up to date than this one. I have also been somewhat keeping up my old work related blog, Axapta Source. Also, more recently, I started a new blog called “Scanner Whores.“ (Which there is actually a story behind the possibly offensive name.) Lastly, I also frequent my other social networking site, Firefighter Nation. (Sometimes even posting to my page there.)
If you are unable to view my myspace blog, (ie – not a direct contact on the site) things are going quite well here. I no longer travel full time, and work as a Business Advisor Associate for Goodrich in Jamestown, ND. Getting to work in town full time is great. It gives me more time overall. I get to spend more time with Jennie, more time with the dart team, more availability for the fire department, etc.

Other than that – things are pretty quiet at the moment. If you either have a lot of free time, or an interest in Jamestown life, feel free to check out the new blog.
