As I mentioned in my Goals for 2010 post, I have some goals for writing this next year. On that note, I would like to introduce a project I have been working on related to that:

Epic Plains – An epic place with epic stories – welcome to Epic Plains.

The site is going to serve a few purposes for me. First, it is a portal to my other websites that I work on occasionally. (This one, Model Train Rookie, etc.) This blog and Epic Plains are going to be my main online works in the next year. Second, it is going to focus on just writing related posts. Whether it is my own work or the works of others, it is a literary blog.

The first main post I have there is my 2010 writing goals. Stop by and check it out. If you find it of interest, please subscribe to the RSS feed. I will sometimes cross-link with this site, but as it is an independent site with a specific focus, safest bet is to subscribe over there as well.

Thanks and have the best luck in accomplishing your own goals this next year.

NaNoWriMo 2009 has started. We are now 2 hours in for those folks in the Central Time zone. I decided to really make a go of it this year, so wanted to get a start right out of the gate. I have managed to already go past the daily word goal of 1667 words hitting 1815 before calling it a night.

For those who don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, check out the site. Brief version is it stands for National Novel Writing Month with the goal being to right a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. It is crazy, fun, and something that I haven’t actually managed to finish the last couple of years. (Get busy, etc.) Well, day 1 this year I have already topped what I wrote all of last years NaNoWriMo – so I would say that things are looking good! Still pumped and excited.

If interested, you can follow my progress to that 50k goal line on my user page. (Click here.) Otherwise I do plan on having the wordcount widget on this site as well.

Well deviantArt has released a new gallery feature. It is pretty cool actually. I have been testing it a while in beta, but the final version is pretty slick. For subscribers you can have multiple portfolios, which one might do if they were showing these to clients. I just have the one as my main purpose is to showcase my best work.

Check out my deviantArt Portfolio here: Jake Barnard – Digital Works

Here are a couple of my favorite pieces that are on there:

On the merry-go-round by =olorinpc on deviantART

Ready for the ride by =olorinpc on deviantART

Firetrucks on Parade BW by =olorinpc on deviantART

The portfolio is separate from the deviantArt galleries, but all images displayed on there can be found in my dA gallery. Prints can also be purchased from the dA gallery if you see something you really like. I have discovered the downside to taking tons of pictures with the new camera is developing a huge backlog of images to process and post, but that is part of the fun!

Oh and if anyone has a better idea for a tagline, let me know. I think it needs some work.

I have linked as much as possible to a reference site for each for those interested.

Event agenda:

Participating Organizations: ND Policy Council, Citizens for Responsible Government, SayAnythingBlog.Com, ND Hospitality Association, Land Owners Association of North Dakota, (Attending: ND Farm Bureau, NFIB, ND Petroleum Marketers, ND Stockmen Association)

11:10 – 12:00: Higher Education

12:45 – 1:15: Government Transparency

1:20 – 1:50: Economic Development

1:55 – 2:25: Taxpayer-funded Lobbying

2:30 – 3:00: Extraterritorial Zoning

So that is the list of sessions that we can attend. Quite the wide range of topics, but should be interesting. ND having been my home for almost 10 years now (and going to be much much longer now as I live/work/own a house here) this should be quite the opportunity for me to dig deeper into ND politics/government.

Side note – any Bismarck friends who might be around, Shane and I are planning a Buffalo Wild Wings pilgrimage while in town. So let me know!

Well it has been catch up at work and busy at home, so haven’t been able to get a post done here yet this week. However, I do have a couple of posts I wrote from other sites to link to!

For those interested in model railroading… I have a blog started for that specific hobby. A post went up today on constructing the table/benchwork.

Frequent YouTube visitors – there is something funky going on with embedded videos, possible virus/phishing alert. (Actns/Swif.T is what it comes up as.)

Not a post, but I have been upgrading my blogs to WordPress 2.7 RC1. I tested out the new beta versions, and really like the changes I see. My main plugins are all working, with a couple of issues with minor ones that I just dropped anyways.

It was the quote of the day today. I added it to my Quotes plugin that displays a random quote on my right-most side bar. I like to find quotes that means something to me and share them there… today I found one interesting enough to do a post on.

The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.

Why is that interesting? Well it is interesting to think about what Jefferson was getting at with that comment. Was it some deep commentary on journalism and ethics of the time? Was he peeved at the newspapers in relation to something? (Which being a prominant political figure was certainly possible.)

I like to think what he was getting at here is that people need to think for themselves. Don’t just soak up what you read in the newspaper. (Or a blog for that matter.) The net has allowed us to get information from multiple sources. Use that to your advantage. The other part of that is, don’t allow someone to control your viewpoint. Also, augment your viewpoint. You read something on the war in Iraq, read a book (magazine, blog, website, etc) on Iraq history, Pacifism, WWII, etc. Expanding on what the background will give you a wider range of knowledge about a subject, allowing for a deeper understanding.

So here you go:

Ede certainly had an interesting weekend. He, his wife, and the little guy, left for L.A. to partake in his brothers wedding. This also happens to be right in the area of the extreme Cali wildfires that are going on at the moment. I will let Ede do a post about things, and hopefully post some pics too. From the news, other bloggers, and calls from over there – it was something else. So make sure to keep an eye both here and on his blog. I look forward to seeing the pics myself – so am sure to do a post.

They are on their way back now safe, with a brother married, and sound.
